Jebro Inc., headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa, was founded in 1972 by three companies - Irving F. Jensen Company, L.G. Everist Company, and Brower Construction Company (J-Jensen; E-Everist; B-Brower; hence Jebro).
That same year, construction began on a 20-acre site in Sioux City for a liquid asphalt storage facility. The primary purpose of the facility was to import liquid asphalt cement by barge and rail, store in terminal tanks and ship hot materials by truck transports to contractors, city, county and state agencies in a 150 mile area.
In 1984, Jebro began operating a second terminal in Corson, S.D. The product line was expanded to eight grades of asphalt cement for hot mix paving and ten grades of cutback asphalt for cold mixes and seal coatings.
In 1985, Jebro became the first in the three state area to construct facilities to manufacture various types of polymerized asphalt. The move to polymerized asphalt was based on changing traffic patters and road specifications.
In 1987, Jebro constructed a new emulsion manufacturing facility at the Sioux City terminal. These products are used primarily in the seal coating maintenance and recycling area of the road construction industry. With the construction of the emulsion plant, the laboratory facilities were doubled in size to meet the demand of increased product quality control and research.
In 1989, Jebro launched its Used Oil Division to provide used oil collection and recycling services for oil producers and consumers. The products it recycles include motor and crankcase oils, hydraulic fluid, fuel oil, and gearbox and transmission oils. The division began by offering services to the Sioux City market area. In 1992, it expanded its operations to Des Moines and Sioux Falls. In 1993, it entered the Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska markets, and in 2001, it expanded to the Kansas City market area, serving both Missouri and Kansas.
In 2005, Jebro became a member of Knife River Corporation. Knife River is the construction materials and mining subsidiary of MDU Resources Group, Inc. (NYSE: MDU).
Jebro originally began with a three grade product line and has grown to the development of over 30 grades that meet the needs of the agencies responsible for low-traffic to high-traffic systems. The original four tank, one terminal facility has grown to a 65 tank, two terminal industry leader. A network of barges, railcars and truck transports now service a 300 mile area of nearly 100 contractors and public agencies.
